The Opportunity – and Challenge – of Expanding Food Imports to the United States
Part of the Global Midwest Alliance Food Industry and Technology Series
Even though the United States remains mired in difficult economic circumstances, the opportunity to expand imports of food into the nation is growing. The needs of different ethnic communities, the desire for fresh organic produce all year round, and even the simple demands of a growing population mean that the U.S. will have to rely even more on imported foods.
However, importing food is not easy. Finding distributors and retail customers remain as obstacles. Tariffs and customs still exist for many countries, even with the increasing numbers of Free Trade Agreements. But probably the greatest upcoming challenge are the yet-to-be-introduced rules of the Food Safety Modernization Act.
This informative and interactive seminar, held in a central point for the distribution of food across the U.S. will bring together foreign exporters and domestic importers; buyers, purchasing agents, and procurement management from a range of food processing companies; regulators at local, state, and federal levels; and a broad array of groups with an interest in expanding the international food trade.

Global Midwest Alliance
The Global Midwest Alliance (GMA) is the only business-led economic development group for the Midwest region. GMA facilitates collaboration among key stakeholders to provide access to global business opportunities to the Midwest and realize economic value from existing world-class assets in the Midwest. GMA focuses on programs and platforms that help high growth companies develop and expand markets for businesses based in the Midwest, encourage and assist international business activities in the region, and integrate business, financial and scientific resources for successful commercialization of technology in the Midwest.
This event will feature two separate panel discussions. The first panel will be focused on the reasons why imports are likely to grow over the coming decades.
PANEL DISCUSSION #1: “Opportunity”: The Market for Food Imports to the US
- What is the overall market opportunity for food imports to the US?
- What categories are growing fastest, and where is there currently an unmet need?
- What types of food are likely to have the greatest appeal and most significant advantage?
A panel of experts drawn from many different parts of the US food supply chain will address these questions and more in a session moderated by David Oppedahl, business economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Details of additional panel participants will be distributed as they are confirmed.
